Area 1

The monastery household courtyard, originally used for growing vegetables, and keeping livestock and horses, is today a public open space. It is accessed from the southwest through a gateway between the church and the bell tower, which leads to the smaller southern part of the courtyard containing the well and its rotunda. This in turn leads to the main courtyard space, which is accessed from the Hlynyanska Gate through the building along the eastern boundary of the competition site. The way between these two gates is often used as a pedestrian short cut and tourist route through the monastery complex. The northern part of the courtyard is less frequently populated, and is used mainly by the occupants of the adjacent buildings and customers of the summer terrace café at the courtyard’s northern wall. Parts of the courtyard are currently being used for informal parking: the smaller southern part by approximately 8 cars belonging to the inhabitants of the buildings immediately to the south (outside the competition site); the larger part by up to 8 cars belonging to the occupants of the offices and institutions.

Design considerations: The use of the courtyard as a pedestrian and tourist route through the complex is to be retained.

It is envisioned that the northern part is made available for cultural and art activities, including those of the Lviv National University School of Culture and Arts, which currently occupies the northern wing of the monastery building.

Designs should take into account the possible conversion into exhibition spaces of the garages on the ground floor of the building along the eastern side of the courtyard

Area 2

The cathedral forecourt and the triangular open space adjacent to it at the west. The forecourt connects the inner city to the parts of the town outside it to the south, while, at the same time, it functions as an open-air extension of the cathedral on holy days. The smaller triangular space leads on to other open spaces to the west. It contains a small lawn with trees, the summer terrace of an adjacent restaurant and a frequently used, but unofficial bus stop.

Design considerations: The two parts of Area 2 are to be considered as one space. Serbska Street, which runs between them, is to be gradually pedestrianized with emergency vehicular access only.

The forecourt in front of the cathedral is to continue to function as an open-air extension of the cathedral on holy days.

Area 3

The small park in front of the west wing of the monastery building on the site of what was the monastery’s fruit garden, and the part of Serbska Street to the west of it. Some of the walls at the edge of the park follow the lines of those that, until 1954, enclosed the former fruit garden. A wide path runs through the park connecting the cathedral forecourt to Valova Street and the inner city to the north. The park is used occasionally for a handicrafts market, and as a recreational amenity by local inhabitants. At night the park is sometimes used by vagrants.

A nearby café erects a temporary terrace there in the summer.

Design considerations: It is envisioned that the park in Area 3 retains its functions, but competitors are asked to suggest new configurations and treatments for it. Certain trees have to be kept (see Tree Plan). Serbska Street is to be gradually pedestrianized with emergency vehicular access only. For the next couple of years it is planned to allow few parking spaces for residents of the neighboring buildings and short term service vehicles stops.

Area 4

Between the monastery building and Volova Street, which used to be part of the fruit garden, and the strip extending along the northern wall of the monastery courtyard. The part immediately adjacent to the monastery is currently used as the outdoor event space of the Museum of Ideas, which is located on the lower floors of the adjacent monastery building. The event space is fenced off and contains a large semi-permanent tent-like structure. The part between the event space and Volova Street is a continuation of the small park of Area 3. From here, steps lead up to a footpath that extends eastwards along Volova Street, where, at about 1 metre above the street level, it runs along the line of the former fortification wall, fragments of which still exist.

Design considerations: It is envisaged that Area 4 is to be used as a public space for art installations, exhibitions, cultural events and so on, which could not only relate to the activities of the Museum of Ideas, but also to those of the neighbouring University School of Culture and Arts. Parking along Valova St. is planned to be gradually limited, allowing parking spaces for residents and short term service vehicles stops only.

Area 5

The area between the building along the monastery’s eastern side and Vynnychenka Street. Its main feature is a public concourse two metres below the Vynnychenka Street level. This space connects to the Hlynyanska Gate via a timber railed bridge across a (currently dry) pond running along the base of the monastery wall. Some of the elements here, including parts of the monastery wall and its central tower, were reconstructed in the 1970s to match what remained of the original fortifications. A pedestrian subway leads off the concourse to connect with Mytna Square on the other side of Vynnychenka Street.

Design considerations: The general configuration of the space is to be retained, while its amenity value should be improved.

Area 6

The monastery’s cloister courtyard or “paradise garden”. Access is limited to the staff and users of the State Historical Archive, which is currently housed in the surrounding buildings.

Design consideration: At the present time, there are no plans to open the cloister courtyard to the general public. However, its amenity value to archive users and staff needs to be improved
